Top 5 Favorite Korean Dramas

Hey everyone! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have my top 5 favorite Korean Dramas.

This isn’t going to dramas that I would recommend you start out with if you’re new to Korean dramas but they are some of my favorites. I will be making a recommendation post for newbies, but that’s not what this is.

This won’t be in any particular order. Just how I chose them off the list from MyDramaList.

Let’s get into this.

tumblr_opqydsX9ur1rrn7p8o1_500

1. Descendants of the Sun

I adore this kdrama so much! It’s so addicted and if I remember correctly, was the one I watched when I got back into kdramas again.

This is drama two military doctors who are stationed in a war zone. According to MyDramaList, “the story will track both their personal and professional struggles while exploring issues about the value of life.” It’s a beautiful drama that will make you laugh and cry and have all of the feels you adore.

2. W

This is one of the ones that I don’t recommend if you’re new to Korean dramas. This is a tough one to keep track of the storyline of especially while trying to get used to reading captions instead of just listening to the words. But if you’re used to Korean dramas and haven’t seen this, PLEASE WATCH IT. It’s so good.

This story follows a woman whose father ends up going missing while working on finishing up the webtoon series he’s writing. While trying to figure out what happened to her father, she somehow ends up inside of the webtoon, laying in the blood of the main character while he’s bleeding out on a rooftop.

3. Missing You

This was one of the first Kdramas that I ever watched that was dark and wasn’t a funny romance. This one hit me hard. It was tough to watch at times. I don’t remember any of the trigger warnings but I feel like I remember there being some. I need to rewatch this one soon. (Looking at the Wikipedia page, it says there is rape and I know there’s bullying by the synopsis on MyDramaList. So be weary)

Missing You is about a woman who is the daughter of a murderer. She was bullied as a child and fell in love with the boy who protected her. Due to an accident they were separated. Now they have become reconnected as adults but our main character is in a relationship with another man.

There’s so much about this that is just so surprising. Just go into it as blind as you can and you’ll be fine. Like I said previously, just be weary of the trigger warnings and know that this Korean drama is a dark and twisted one. But I love it so much.

4. Goblin

Now, I’ve mentioned this one before and I will continue to mention it. I was kind of iffy about it when I first started, but I ended up loving it! It’s a funny little romance with a fantastical twist to it. And the banter is just fantastic.

This is about a girl who believes that she is the Goblin’s Bride because she can see something that only the Goblin’s Bride can see on the Goblin. She tries to prove that she is his bride over and over again but he doesn’t want to accept it because of the fate he would face if that’s the case. With the addition of the Grim Reaper, who is after both the Goblin and his possible bride, this becomes a jumbled mess of a story that somehow all fits together perfectly.

I feel like calling the Goblin a goblin isn’t an accurate description. He’s more of a powerful demon in my opinion.

5. I Hear Your Voice

This is probably my favorite right now. But it’s so hard to decide between all of these awesome Korean dramas. This one was just so good to me!

This is a drama about lawyer who ends up teaming up with a man who can read people’s thoughts. But the twist is that the man has been in love with the woman ever since she testified against the killer of his father.

I just loved this one so much. Maybe not one for a beginner but I’ll be getting to some good ones in another post coming soon!

I hope you enjoyed and I’ll talk to you all in the comments!

Happy Watching! Bye!

Korean Drama Review: Strong Woman Do Bong Soon

If you follow my book reviews an wrap ups, you know that I review book differently than just using the regular star system. I use a point system that I got from Kim Here in YouTube (watch her video here).

But the gist of it is that you have 5 different categories and you can give a certain number of points depending on your thoughts. I’m changing one of the categories to fit into Kdramas and changing the amount of points so that it will fit with the stars on MyDramaList. There will still be 5 categories but I will only be giving 0-2 points for each category.

So let’s discuss the categories:

Acting
Characters
Story
Pacing
Personal Thoughts

So all of them are pretty self-explanitory so I’ll only talk about the difference between “acting” and “characters.”

The characters can be very well thought out but the acting could be poor. So the acting refers to just that and the characters refer to how well written they were.

So let’s just get into this review. If you have any other questions, ask them down below.

Today, I’m reviewing Strong Woman Do Bong Soon. I just finished watching it a few minutes ago and  I just had to review it now!

This drama follows Bong Soon, a woman who just happens to be super strong. She tries to keep this super power a secret from everyone and tries to lead a normal life. That is until she ends up hurting the CEO of a video game company. Now she has to nurse him back to health. All while there is a kidnapper on the loose. Bong Soon’s childhood crush is a detective on the case, which makes things even more entangled.

Acting

I am giving the acting 2 points.

I personally think that all of the actors did a wonderful job at portraying their characters. There’s not much else to say. I think they did a wonderful job and I’ll be keeping my eyes out for more of their stuff.

Characters

I will have to give the characters 1 point.

The main characters were awesome and they were very fleshed out, in my opinion. But there were just a few side characters that I wish would have been given more time and we were given more of a chance to get to know their personalities.

Story

I’m going to have to give the story 1 point also.

I think that everything was planned out nicely and wrapped up just as nice but I did have some issues.

To me, it seemed like the kidnapper storyline was just a little side story to keep you interested. The romance was the main focus. But I also believe that they could have done this with more emphasis on the kidnapper. I feel like this story could have almost existed without that little snippet. It came into play a couple times but overall, it seemed kind of useless.

I feel like a lot of the side stories were not needed. I feel like they were thrown in just for the fun of it and not necessary. But that kind of made them necessary. Something to get you out of the romance and keep you interested and watching.

But I did love the romance. It was adorable and I knew from the beginning I was going to love it. I loved how the ending showed what happened after everything. That made me very happy. I was even crying at the end, which is always a good sign.

Pacing

Another 2 points.

I think that the pacing was great. Despite the fact there were 16 episodes, each an hour long, you stayed interested in most parts. And if you started to lose interest, something happened and it came back.

It may have taken me a while to get through but I finally did and I still think the pacing was great.

Personal Thoughts

2 points!

I loved this kdrama so much. It had me feeling all sorts of feeling. I usually don’t watch kdramas on my TV because my son either has something on or my husband does. But I just needed to continue and threw it up there. I loved this so much.

I do recommend it, overall. It’s a wonderful kdrama. I don’t know if I’d recommend it as a first kdrama to watch but overall, it was great.

So overall 8 out of 10 points!

So that’s it! I hope you enjoyed! Let me know if you’ve seen this and your thoughts on it!

Happy Watching! Bye!

Ten Korean Dramas That I Want To Watch

Hey everyone! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have ten Korean Dramas that I would like to see.

Today I’m only going to be talking about ten of the Korean Dramas that I would like to watch. And it’s only going to be ones that aren’t currently still airing; well, maybe. I hope.

Let’s get into this!

1. My Secret Romance

I absolutely adore romance dramas so this one seems to be right up my alley.

2. 1% of Something (Remake)

Again, I absolutely love romances, especially when there is a rich boy involved.

3. Fated to Love You

Romantic comedy about unplanned pregnancy? Sign me up. Throw in Choi Jin Hyuk and yes yes yes!

4. Doctor Stranger

Seriously though, I would watch anything with Lee Jong Suk. He’s such a wonderful actor and a joy to watch.

5. Jealousy Incarnate

Again, anything with Jo Jung Suk, I would watch in a heartbeat. I hate that I missed out on 3 years of Korean Dramas. Time to catch up.

6. Personal Taste

“Bending the rules of ‘straight’ and ‘gay'” Sign me up! Lee Min Ho is another one that I would watch in a heartbeat, even though I wasn’t as obsessed with Heirs as everyone else.

7. Lovely Love Lie (The Liar and His Lover)

A kdrama and singing? Yup! I’m sold.

8. High End Crush

Jung Il Woo is another one. You know the drill.

9. Love and Secret

Holy crap. This one has 102 episodes. But it’s about a single mom and the father of her child returns. I can deal with 102 episodes of that. And it looks like a love triangle. Even better! Kdramas and anime seem to be the only place I enjoy love triangles.

10. Emergency Couple

Choi Jin Hyuk starring in a hospital drama. Let’s do this!

And that’s it! Let me know if you would like to see me do a try an episode tag for these! I would love to do that.

Happy Watching! Bye!

Korean Monday: Most Anticipated March Kdramas

I decided that since I haven’t finished a Kdrama in a while, I was going to list some of the ones that I want to watch that are starting in March.

I’m going to list the ones I want to watch and give a little synopsis about it (at least what I gather). I’ll make sure to put the start date and what days they will be on. And I’ll make sure to mention who some of the actors and actresses are in it.

If you would like for me to do a “first impression” of any of these, let me know. Also, if you would rather I do episode reviews, let me know. I think if I did episode reviews, I would also add a prediction part to it. Then after the next episode, I’ll say if it happened or not.

I was going to say these are in no particular order but I looked at it again and realized they are in alphabetical order. All of the AsianWiki pages will be linked. All photos are from Google.

  1. Lovely Love Lie (The Liar and His Lover)
    the-liar-and-his-lover
This drama is based off the manga “Kanojo wa Uso o Aishisugiteru.” I’m pretty sure that I’ve read this manga before but I can’t be too sure. I plan on reading it before the show starts on March 20th.
This drama will follow Han Kyeol, a wonderful composer that hides himself from the world. Until he meets So Rim, a high schooler with a lovely voice. And, as you can imagine, romance blossoms, I’m sure.
This drama will be run on Mondays and Tuesdays. Lee Hyun Woo is going to be Han Kyeol and Joy of Red Velvet will be doing her first drama role as So Rim.
  2. Radiant Office
    radiant-office
I’m not too sure how I’m going to feel about this drama. I don’t know how it’s going to handle mental illness but it will definitely be triggering for some people. So, warning, if you’re triggered by suicide, stay clear of this drama. This will follow a woman who decides to commit suicide by jumping into the Han River. She is saved and brought to the hospital. While there, she learns that she might not have much time to live. She barely manages to get a job after that. This will follow her journey.
It starts March 15th and will air on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Ko Ah Sung will be playing Eun Ho Won. Ha Seok Jin will be Seo Woo Jin.
  3. Tunnel
    tunnel
This drama follows a detective that is hunting down a serial killer. When he is literally chasing this killer, he ends up running into a tunnel. When he comes out on the other side, he has gone from the year 1986 to the year 2017, where the killer has resumed the killings. Now he needs to work with a detective and a Professor of Criminal Psychology to try to catch this serial killer.
This drama will air every Saturday and Sunday starting March 25th. It is starring Choi Jin Hyuk, Yoon Hyun Min, and Lee Yoo Young.

Top 10: Korean Actors and Actresses (Korean Mondays)

Today, I decided to talk about some of my favorite Korean actors and actresses, obviously. These are some actors/actresses that if I see in a drama or movie, I automatically want to watch it without even knowing what it’s about! This isn’t going to be in any set order, though. Just listed as I think of them! I haven’t seen every drama all of these actors/actresses have been in. So I’ll be listing who I like, why I like them (even though this portion of each will be mainly just because I love them), my favorite I’ve seen, a list of which ones I’ve seen that they’ve been in, and I’ll link to their Instagram if they have it.

  1. Kim Woo Bin
    kim-woo-bin
I love Kim Woo Bin. He plays such a good bad boy that you just can’t help but to love. Every drama I’ve seen him in, I’ve been on his side of things, knowing that I probably shouldn’t be. I’d have to say my favorite drama I’ve seen him in is Uncontrollably Fond. I’ve seen The Heirs and Uncontrollably Fond. So  I haven’t seen too many with Kim Woo Bin but I still really enjoy his acting. From what I can tell, he doesn’t have Instagram.
  2. Park Shin Hye
    park-shin-hye
Park Shin Hye seems to be in all the dramas that I love. She seems to be able to play several different roles without an issue. I have seen Heartstrings, Flower Boy Next Door, The Heirs, and Pinocchio. Pinocchio is my favorite even though Heartstrings was a definitely close second. You can follow her on Instagram here!
  3. Lee Jong Suk
    lee-jong-suj
The first drama that I saw Lee Jong Suk in was I Can Hear Your Voice and that’s by far my favorite that he’s been in. I just felt so much emotion in that drama. Then I saw him in Pinocchio and he automatically became a favorite of mine. I have since seen him in W and that was another drama I loved. I have yet to see him in a bad drama. You can follow him on Instagram here.
  4. Jang Geun Suk
    jang-geun-suk
I feel bad. I’ve only seen him in You’re Beautiful and Love Rain, neither of which I have finished. But that hair! I do plan on watching more drama with him but as on right now since I haven’t finished either, my favorite is Love Rain. You can follow him on Instagram here.
  5. Bae Suzy
    bae-suzy
I know a lot of people don’t like Suzy’s acting but I’m fine with it. I’ve only seen her in Dream High and Uncontrollably Fond, which is my favorite. You can tell a difference in her acting skills between the two. At least, I can. I will continue to watch more drama with her. You can follow her Instagram here.
  6. IU
    iu
Ugh. How freaking adorable is IU? And her voice? Yes! Everything about IU is just perfection. I absolutely love her! I’ve seen Dream High and I’ve seen a lot of You’re The Best. I’d have to say Dream High because it’s the only one I’ve seen through completely and she did a great job. You can follow her Instagram here.
  7. Park Yoo Chun
    park-yoo-chun
Last year there was a huge scandal surrounding Park Yoo Chun and if you would like more information, I recommend looking it up. But, I am not believing it just yet. He counter-sued for false accusations and blackmail. I am not taking sides until I know the whole truth. I would like to not get into it on this post so please keep it out of the comments. Park Yoo Chun was in the first drama I watched that gave me real adult feels. I Miss You is one of my all time favorite dramas to this day. It was the first that had me literally on the edge of my seat the whole time. It wasn’t a cheesy little romance, not that those are bad. It was very adult and I loved it. I still do.
  8. Ok Taec Yeon
    ok-taecyeon
I absolutely LOVE Taec Yeon. He is definitely my bias in 2PM. I adored him in We Got Married: Global Edition. He was awesome even though I didn’t like his “wife.” I’ll continue talking about my feelings about this with the next guy! I have watched Dream High completely and started Who Are You. I’m counting Dream High as my favorite because I haven’t finished any others. You can follow him on Instagram here.
  9. Lee Hong Kilee-hong-ki
Lee Hong Ki… Yes. Defintely. His singing voice is perfection. And not to mention, he was perfect in We Got Married. His “marriage” was so adorable that I was wishing it was real. Unfortunately, Hong Ki hasn’t been in any dramas recently. It’s been a few years. You’re Beautiful is the only show I’ve seen with Hong Ki and I haven’t finished it. I need to still. Hong Ki was so funny in it. You can follow him in Instagram here.
  10. Yoo In Na
    yoo-in-na
I’ve seen Goblin and some of You’re The Best. I’ve also started My Love From Another Star. I enjoy Yoo In Na’s acting and I really want to see her in more stuff. Everything I’ve seen her in has been a supporting character. I really want to see her as a main character. Goblin was definitely my favorite that I’ve seen her in. I don’t believe she’s got a confirmed Instagram.

KDrama First Thoughts: Uncontrollably Fond

uncontrollably-fond

I decided to start watching Uncontrollably Fond starring Kim Woo Bin and Bae Suzy. I linked each of the DramaWiki pages under the title and their names. I’ve seen three episodes so far and as I’m typing this, I’m starting the fourth.

I don’t usually read the synopsis to a drama before I start watching it so I wasn’t too sure what I was getting into when I started watching this. From what I have learned so far, this is a story of a dying celebrity meeting with a girl that he used to date. We are unsure what their backgrounds are like or what their relationship really was.

Throughout the show, we flashback to them in high school and then the two meeting up again four years later. With the flashbacks, it’s tough to tell where in their storyline we are exactly but it becomes known shortly after it starts so that’s not too much of a big deal.

I know a lot of people don’t like Suzy’s acting but I don’t mind it. I feel like it fits this roll fairly well. Woo Bin’s roles are all generally the same for what I’ve seen. This one fits that also. But, I feel like we are getting such a deeper story into his character this time around since he’s a main character. I have seen him in Heirs and I was disappointed that he was only a side character. I’m glad he got a lead role in this drama and we get to not only see his acting as a lead role but also we get to hear his singing, which I definitely need more of in my life.

Let me tell you, Kim Woo Bin, you sir are one handsome man.

Either way, in the end, I’m definitely enjoying this drama and I will be putting a review up when I finish it. Let me know your spoiler free thoughts of this drama! And here are some pictures of Woo Bin from the drama with his chocolate abs!
