Wrap Up: November, Readathin, Contemporaryathon, Scallywagathon, Emojiathon

Hey everyone! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have my wrap up for November, which includes Readthin, Scallywagathon, Contemporaryathon, and Emojiathon.

I ended up reading 5 books and DNFed 2

2 were physical copies
5 were ebooks

3 were arcs

My ratings were rather high but there were a couple low ones.

I don’t know the page count because I DNFed two. But it wasn’t too much.

Let’s talk about the books.

Prophecy Awakened by Tamar Sloan

34737063

This is the first book that I ended up DNFing. I ended up DNFing it at 78%. It wasn’t because of the book. I was enjoying it enough. But it just wasn’t interesting me enough. It was too “young” for me. I definitely think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it earlier in my life.

I ended up getting this from NetGalley for my honest review.

Overall, I gave this book 6 out of 20 points. Transferring to 1.5 stars.

Most of the points I gave were one point for each category, except the writing. I gave that 2. I just wasn’t a fan of this book at this point in my life.

Diamond by JA Low

36224644

I absolutely adored this book. 17 out of 20 points and 4.5 stars! I loved it so much. I got this book from NetGalley for my honest review. I ended up doing a full review, which you can view here.

Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

33643994

Another book I adored! I gave this one 19 out of 20 points and 5 stars. I absolutely adored it. I also did a full review of this book here.

Saga Vol 1 by Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staples

15704307

I enjoyed this but it wasn’t anything super special to me. It still got a 17 out of 20 points and 4.5 stars but it wasn’t anything super ground breakin to me. It was well written but it just didn’t really hit me the way that I would have thought it would. I’m still debating continuing.

Suddenly Dirty by JA Low

29334642

Another one that I absolutely adored. I can’t get over how much I love JA Low’s writing. There’s a trigger warning for miscarriage, though, so be weary. There are a few things that kind of irked me but overall, I really enjoyed it.

I gave this book 16/20 points and 4.5 stars.

Faster Than A Kiss Vol 1

8110748

This was a reread for me and holy crap. I don’t even know why I liked this the first time. It was so weird. I didn’t give it a star rating or a point rating but man. It was weird.

Royal Pain by Tracy Wolff

35212286

And here’s the other book that I DNFed. I decided to DNF it at like 18%. It wasn’t my style at all. I’ve come to realize that I don’t like a lot of adult books. This, unfortunately, was one of the ones that I didn’t like.

I got this book from NetGalley for my honest review. I didn’t do a full review but I did review what I read of it. I gave it 10 out of 20 points and 3 stars.

I feel like people who like just guilty pleasure, mindless adult books, would probably like this. But it just wasn’t more me.

Now, let’s wrap up the readathons I participated in!

Scallywagathon

I completed all four challenges with 3 books. Here’s what I read for it and what challenges I completed.

Diamond – Davy Jones’s Locker – Involves Death

Daughter of the Pirate King – Crow’s Nest – New Release You’ve Had Your Eyes On

Saga – X Marks The Spot – Book A Friend Treasures, Ropes End – Read in a day

Contemporaryathon

I ended up completing 5 challenges with 2 books.

Suddenly Dirty – Read your most recently purchased/recieved contemporary, Read an adult contemporary

Faster Than a Kiss – Read a contemporary that is over 5 years old, Read a contemporary not set in summer, Read a dark or taboo contemporary

Emojiathon

I failed this. I didn’t finish a single book during this readathon.

Readthin

I completed 11 challenges with 3 books. I feel accomplished for Readathin.

Daughter of the Pirate King – Read a 2017 release, Read a book that is related to your favorite emoji (the crying laughing face), Read a new to you author, Read a book you ended up putting down previously, Read a book you got from a subscription box

Diamond – Read a book you got for free, Read a horror/thriller (this definitely has a thriller aspect to it, to me), Read a book outside your favorite genre (I’m not a fan of adult books so it counts), Read an ebook

Saga – Read a book that counts toward another readathon, Read a book in 24 hours

And, in case you’re wondering, here are the months we’ll be hosting Readathin in 2018!

February
May
August
November

Please join us!

Let me know how your reading went for November!

Happy Reading! Bye!

TBR: Readathin and November 2017

Hey everyone! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have my TBR for Readathin and November.

Before I get started, I want to mention that I’m participating in 3 readathons other than Readathin. I will be doing Borrowathon, Contemporaryathon, and Emojiathon. I will be fitting Contemporaryathon and Emojiathon into Readathin but I won’t be including those books on here. I will be posting separate TBRs for all the readathons.

Make sure to use the hashtag #ReadathinNov2017 on Twitter and Instagram so we can see your stuff. Here are the links for Readathin.

So another thing. If you’ve been paying attention or following me, I had been taking one class during most of September and October. I just started my two new classes on the 30th. I decided this term to take 2, one English and one History. So I’m going to be super duper busy. It’s going to be like that for a while.

So I’m going to be focusing on school and my son first, as always but that may mean things will be changing. I probably won’t be reading as much and I probably won’t be posting as much. I have already cut my days down to definitely Tuesday and Thursday, sometimes Saturday for reviews. But those will be the only days I’m definitely going to be posting here and on my BookTube channel. I am going to try to squeeze in some other blog posts here but don’t bet on them. I will try to prioritize New Releases so you guys can get those on Fridays or Sundays (I haven’t decided yet, probably Sundays). Anything other than that will just be random posts like lists, Top 5 Wednesdays or tags.

P.s. Enjoy all of the Fruits Basket gifs. I’m obsessed.

Let’s do this!

tumblr_numn1wwlCn1rypvm7o1_540.gif

Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

img_6381

I will be buddy reading these two books along with Melissa from The Written Adventure. I read the last two Shadow and Bone books along with her and she pushed me through. So I’m hoping the same happens for these so I can get to a point where I love it and just fly through them.

I wasn’t a fan of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, but I would like to give these two a try and see how I feel about them.

I may or may not slip The Language of Thorns in there too but I don’t know. Maybe if it fits for an Emojiathon challenge.

Six of Crows will count for the challenges of buddy read a book and read a diverse bookCrooked Kingdom will count for start and finish a series and read a book related to your favorite emoji.

tumblr_nmivsxcSqM1s8j4k8o1_500

So that’s it for Readathin so far. Look forward to more TBRs to come throughout the month. Why? Because I obviously hate myself and think I can read two tomes on top of several other books on top of momming and studenting and working.

tumblr_nti8guvpUh1rypvm7o1_r1_500.gif

So thanks for reading! I hope you enjoyed! I will see you guys in the next one!

Happy reading! Bye!

Announcement!!! Happy Readathin!

Hey guys! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have an exciting announcement! If you couldn’t tell by the title, I’m announcing the next Readathin!

Let’s just get into this!

tumblr_njbw2jKSpA1rt5pgzo1_400

Alright. So first, what is Readathin?

Readathin is a readathon that is held by Jessica from JessicaMarie493, Chelsea from A Very Bookish Girl, and myself. The goal of this readathon is to read books that you own! That’s pretty much it. If you’re reading books you own, you’re winning.

This round there’s actually a challenge that isn’t for a book you own but I’ll explain that later.

We held the first round of Readathin in August and it was such a blast! I can’t wait to have the next one in….

November!!!! The next readathin will be held in November! I know if you are following the Twitter and were around the last day of the last round, this was already announced. But for those who didn’t know, here’s the announcement!

So, now that we know when, let’s talk about some challenges!

If you have any questions, feel free to comment down below or send one of us a message asking! We’re always happy to answer any you may have!

I will have a Google Doc linked on the Twitter (if you click here you can go to the Twitter account for Readathin) so you can find just this list without the explanations to make things easier when creating your TBR.

So let’s talk challenges.

tumblr_nxeqazpkmy1s3h43ko1_500.gif

1. Read a 2017 Release

This can be any book that was released in 2017. Pretty self-explanatory. But here are a few examples of books I own.

2835

2. Read a Diverse Read

For this, you can read anything that would count as diverse. If you need some recommendations from your shelves, let us know and we can help!

22img_5470

3. Read a book that is related to your favorite emoji

Even I have a tough one with this. But that’s just because I change my emoji often. And none of my books seem to fit into it. But you can interpret this however you please.

4. Read a book with a fall-themed cover.

This is any book that is fall related. It could be fall colored, have leaves on it, etc.

10112885IMG_0643

5. Start and finish a series

This counts duologies, trilogies, or series. Whichever you think you can manage. I do recommend duologies or even a graphic novel series. Those would be easiest.

6. Read a book in 24 hours

This is pretty self explanatory. Start a book and finish it within the next 24 hours. Definitely go for a smaller book or a graphic novel.

7. Read a new to you author

Again. Easy. Read from an author you’ve never read from before.

8. Buddy read a book

Read a book along with someone else. Book clubs/buddy read groups DO count.

9. Read a horror/thriller

I wouldn’t really recommend reading Stephen King during this but it’s an example.

31

10. Read a book outside your favorite genre

Doesn’t have to be one you hate. Can even be a genre you love but it’s not your favorite. just something that is outside your favorite.

11. Read an eBook

Last time a lot of people were asking if eBooks were okay and of course they are! They are part of your TBR. So we decided to add it as a challenge!

12. Listen to the audiobook of a book you own

I love listening to audiobooks and it’s a good way to get through more books! So listen away!

13. Read a book  that counts toward another readathon

I know of two that are going on in November (possibly three) outside of Readathin. If you want to know about some, just Google it or ask one of us hosts.

14. Read the book that’s due back to the library the soonest

We wanted to incorporate some library books into this just because. So here’s one that counts towards the library. Whichever book you need to return the soonest, read that.

15. Read a book that you put down previously

In other words, a book you started but haven’t finished yet.

16. Read a book you got from a subscription box

I get OwlCrate every month and I’m so bad about reading the books I get. So November will be the one where I get to at least one of them.

17. Read a book you got for free (gift, ARC, giveaway, etc)

This could count toward so many different things from ARCs to free eBooks to library books to swap books. So many options here and make sure you go wild with it!

18. Read 4 books that count for at least 8 challenges

So for this one, you will read 4 books, each of which count toward 2 separate challenges. Here’s a little example:

Book 1: Challenge 1 and 2
Book 2: Challenge 8 and 4
Book 3: Challenge 12 and 16
Book 4: Challenge 6 and 3

We didn’t want to pressure you guys into reading a certain number of books so we made it a challenge to read that amount.

Just remember to have fun with this! It’s supposed to be fun and laid back. Let’s keep it that way.

We’re always open to questions or recommendations so make sure to let us know any that you have.

We’re unsure about the sprinting schedule right now but we will update the list if need be.

Thank you all so much for participating last time and don’t forget to use the hashtag #ReadathinNov17 to stay connected with everyone!

Share your TBRs on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag so we can see and share them!

Thanks again everyone! Hope you enjoyed! Make sure to like this post and follow me if you liked this post and want to see more in the future.

I’ll see you guys in the next one!

Happy reading! Bye!

August/Read-a-thin TBR

This is going up earlier than normal. I usually try to put my TBRs up closer to the end of the month. But I wanted to get this up so people had some examples of what would fit for each different Read-a-thin challenge. For more information about Read-a-thin, go check out my announcment post here.

I’m also participating in Unhaulathon but more information about that and my TBR will be going up closer to the end of the month.

So I’m going to tell you what I plan to use each of these books for but that may change depending on what I actually read. I do hope that you can join us for Read-a-thin. If you are, link your TBR below so I can check it out!

Before I get into this, I have a question for all of you. I’ve asked this before but I’m going to ask again. Would you like for me to post at the beginning of the month what posts will be going up when? It may be subject to change but if you would like to know, let me know.

Let’s get into this because there’s a lot of book here.

Book Club Books

Let’s first start out with the book I need to read for book clubs and arcs. I’m hoping to get to these books during July so I can focus on just books for Read-a-thin during August but as of right now, these are the books I’ll be reading in August.

Bad Romance by Heather Demetrios

29102896.jpg

This is the book for the Random Book Monthly Book Club that’s run by Dylan (links listed below) and Jay (links listed below).

The Girl in 6E by AR Torre

20640318

This is the buddy read book for the Buddy Read With Me Facebook group that’s run by Julie (links down below).

Shadow Kiss by Richelle Mead

There’s a readathon that I’m participating in. It’s the Vampire Academy Readathon that’s run by Caroline and Maddie (linked below). As of this moment, I haven’t even read Frostbite. Oops.

ARCs

Royal Pains by Tracy Wolff

Other Books

Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

29283884.jpg

This is the book that I’m going to use for the 2017 release and a diverse read.

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh

18798983 (1).jpg

This is the book that I’m going to use for the cover that’s a similar color to my birthstone and a new to me author. My birthstone is ruby so red is close.

Angels and Demons by Dan Brown

960

I plan on using this for the title/author name that’s starting with the same as my first name. Amanda=Angels. I plan on listening to this book on audio. I started it and was really enjoying it but ended up putting it down.

Bring the Rain by Lizzy Charles

24570273.jpg

This will be used for a book title started with the letters of TBR.

Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson

11071466.jpg

This will be used for both the summer cover and warm colored cover.

Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson

7664334.jpg

This will be used for the book set in summer.

Effortless For You and Perfectly Messy by Lizzy Charles

1812911120628895

This is going to be the series I start and finish and I’m hoping to be able to read one of these in a 24 hour period. I read It Had To Be You in one night so I have high hopes!

I’ll Give You The Sun by Jandy Nelson

20820994.jpg

I’m going to be buddy reading this along with Jessica! We started it a couple months ago but ended up dropping it because we all got distracted. So Jessica and I are going to finish it!

Readathon Announcement and Challenges

Hi Bookies! I know this isn’t the normal kind of post that you see from me but guess what! I have some awesome news!

Jessica from JessicaMarie493, Chelsea from AVeryBookishGirl and I have all teamed up together to bring you guys a readathon!

Now! First thing first. The name. We decided on the name Read-a-thin. It started out as a joke but it just stuck with us so we went with it!

As you can probably guess by the name (or not), this readathon is going to be focused on “thinning out” your TBR.

Let’s lay down some ground rules. This is a laid back readathon and none of these are necessary but they are guidelines and things to help you choose what to read. The goal here is to read books on your TBR shelves. That’s really it.

Here are the “rules”:

  1. You will have the entire month to read these books.
  2. All the books must be books you owned/ordered prior to us announcing the challenges (announcements for future read-a-thins will be made at random).
  3. The goal is to complete 6 challenges (I know, that seems like a lot but hold that thought)
  4. You can double up on challenges. In other words, you can use one book for two different challenges

Now, let’s get into the fun part. The challenges!!!

There are 18 different challenges but like I said, you only have to complete 6 with at least 3 books.

There will be a Google Doc on the Twitter account and they will be listed on our GoodReads group. Also, we’ll have the Google Doc linked at the end of this post along with the rest of our social media accounts.

Here they are:

  1. Read a 2017 release
  2. Read a book that is the same color (or a similar color) as your birthstone
  3. Read a diverse book
  4. Read a book with a title or author with the same first letter as the first letter in your first name (the words “a” and “the” don’t count)
  5. Read a book that is related to your favorite emoji
  6. Read a book starting with a letter from TBR (the word “the” doesn’t count)
  7. Read a book with a summer themed cover
  8. Read a book with a warm colored cover (orange, red, yellow, brown)
  9. Start and finish a series
  10. Read a book in 24 hours
  11. Read a new to you author
  12. Book with water on the cover
  13. Read a book set in summer
  14. Buddy read a book
  15. Read a book recommended to you by someone in the book community
  16. Read a guilty pleasure read
  17. Read an adult/new adult book
  18. Read a book outside of your favorite genre

If you have an questions about these, feel free to ask Chelsea, Jessica or me.

We will be holding reading sprints on Twitter throughout the month and we hope that you can join along with us! Also, we are looking for people to help hold these sprints so if you are interested, please feel free to send one of us a message before the 26th of July. We’ll be spending the 27th and 28th planning out the sprints and announce the sprinters and when they will be hosting them on the 29th.

We do hope that you are able to join us in this fun readathon and work at thinning out your TBR along with us. Follow our Twitter account and join our GoodReads group to keep updated!
