Wrap Up: October 2017

Hey everyone! Welcome back and if you’re new, I’m Amanda from A Court of Books and Love.

Today I have my wrap up for October.

Be warned. This is going to be a short one.

Let’s do this.

The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts by KC Tansley

Genre: Fantasy
Series: The Unbelievables (Book 1)
Page Count: 258
Bought/Borrowed From: NetGalley
Pub Month/Year: July 2015
Form: eBook/eARC

Points

Writing: 2/4
Characters: 3/4
Story: 3/4
Pacing: 2/4
Personal: 3/4
Overall: 13/20 (3.5/5 Stars)

Overall, this book was fine. It was a fairly quick read, but it didn’t seem to keep my interest very easily. I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters or the story itself. The pacing seemed to be slow in the beginning, then pick up more at the end, but there were still points where I felt my interest going elsewhere throughout the story. The writing wasn’t spectacular, but it wasn’t the worst that I’ve read. A lot could have been done with some more editing.

The Girl Who Saved Ghosts by KC Tansley

Genre: Fantasy
Series: The Unbelievables (Book 2)
Page Count: 280
Bought/Borrowed From: NetGalley
Pub Month/Year: October 17, 2017
Form: eBook/eARC

Points

Writing: 2/4
Characters: 2/4
Story: 1/4
Pacing: 1/4
Personal: 2/4
Total: 8/20 (2.5 Stars)

I wasn’t a fan of this book. It was really slow for me and I just didn’t enjoy it very much. It was a huge build up for the next book, which I’m sure will be good, but I just didn’t enjoy it. I won’t be continuing on with the series, unfortunately.

So that’s it. I didn’t get too many books read, but here’s the breakdown before I go.

I’ll see you guys in the next one. Make sure to like this post and follow me on here and Instagram for more bookish related photos.

Happy reading! Bye!

Hey Everyone!

tumblr_nzuho5z7721v1p15bo1_500.gif

Let’s get right into this!

Korean Dramas

Ha. Yeah. I think we all know how that went.

I have watched nothing!

tumblr_oqg3267JBe1vyw7cfo1_500.gif

TV Shows

I did watch Game of Thrones and I enjoyed the episode. It was good. I loved the final F you at the end. And the speech between Dany and Jon was great, imo.

Writing

Yeah. Nothing.

Blogging

July Wrap Up

Hi Bookies!

tumblr_on3yjfrru31snnbgwo1_500

This month has been a very productive month for me. I managed to read 15 books in July! I’ll list the books, some stats about them, then the overall stats.

I apologize, this posted for some reason long before it was meant to. So I took that down. It wasn’t completed and was supposed to be saved as a draft. I don’t know what happened. Here’s the full and updated one.

Let’s just get into this!

Weekly Wrap Up 24-28

I’m going to do this a day early just because I don’t forsee me doing much today. So I’m writing this on the 28th.

You can go check out my full post here, but I’m going to go through and say what I’ve completed from each goal then what I did outside of that. Then I’ll finish up with what I didn’t end up doing.

TV Shows

  • I did end up watching some Doctor Who. I realized that I’d seen most of season 8 so I only had to watch the few episodes I hadn’t seen or I didn’t remember. I’m now on season 9.
  • I also watched this past week’s episode of Game of Thrones and loved it. My only problem is that I feel like it ended abruptly. Like, I was watching it and suddenly it was the credits. It was a finished scene, but I feel like the episode flew by. There was plenty of action, in my opinion. I don’t know what happened to make it seem so short.

Books

  • I finshed reading A List of Cages and absolutely adored it.
  • I didn’t finish the ARC I was reading but I need to check back because I believe that it’s a book that was released last August not this upcoming one.
  • I started reading Frostbite but only got to chapter 2. It definitely started out with action and I love that.

Blog

All of my posts went up and went up on time. The only thing different was that I won’t be doing my weekly wrap up Sunday, it’s obviously up now.

I’ll be writing a spoiler-free review for A List of Cages and that should be going up tomorrow.

Schooling

  • I started to take care of my financial aid. There’s still some stuff I need to do.
  • I took a look at what I needed for schooling but I haven’t purchased anything because what I saw was a textbook and it wasn’t my official book list so I didn’t want to get the wrong thing. I’ll look back at a later date.

Work

  • I didn’t end up feeling any better about my work this week. If anything, I feel worse because of today and yesterday. Yesterday, I didn’t completely finish everything I needed to. I got the important parts done but not everything I was supposed to do. It was a larger amount of work and I was working alone (usually with this amount there’s two people doing it) so I’m not too worried. But it does get to me when I don’t finish my work, no matter the amount.
  • I did a thing. I ended up applying for a part time job. And that job would be at Barnes and Noble. It’s been a life long dream of mine to work at a bookstore and this would be my chance.

Writing

  • Nope. Just nope. I have not written a thing this week. No schedule. Nothing. I’m working on getting my sleep schedule on track before I try to add in time for writing.

How did you do for your weekly goals?

Stay tuned for Sunday for next week’s goals.

June Wrap Up

I have been crazy this month! A couple of the books are from last month but I’m counting them toward this month. Total, I’ve read 13 books this month. 13!! So, let’s get into this and I’ll try to keep it short!

I’m not including the books I read for the BookSwapAThon. I’ll leave a link to my wrap up here.

I enjoyed this series. It wasn’t too bad. It was an easy read (listen). I would recommend this book if you’re looking for something not too in depth.

Harley Quinn, Vol 2: Joker Loves Harley (Rebirth) by Amanda Conner

Review: On GoodReads

This comic was strange. When I was reading it, I was thinking about how strange this book was. But after finishing, I realized that the way this comic is written is completely perfect. It was a giant mess but that fit Harley’s personality perfectly.

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas

Review: Yes

I have so many mixed feelings about this book. It was such a slow read for me and nothing compared to ACOMAF. I don’t regret reading it, though. It was fairly enjoyable even though my review seems to be more of a rant than anything.

Review: GoodReads

I was not a fan of this series, like at all. It wasn’t my thing. It was strange to me and not necessarily in a good way. But I can understand why other people would enjoy this series. It just wasn’t for me.

I absolutely adored this book. There were a couple things that I had issues with but they were easy to look over. It would have been nice if those things hadn’t been a part of the story but that’s okay. I listed some trigger warnings below. The last one is the one that I had an issue with.

Trigger Warnings:
Suicide, Depression, Unhealthy family relationships

I adored this manga back when I first read it. But I don’t think I ever ended up finishing the entire series. So while I’m collecting the new collector’s editions, I’m also going to be rereading it! So this was a reread of Vols 1-3 for me. I even got Jessica to read this!

Quote: “Everyone has a dark side! But it’s their choice whether or not they cultivate it.”
Review: GoodReads

I was looking for a book to listen to on my last day of work before I went on vacation so I asked you guys on Instagram. Most people chose this book so I decided to go for it! Well, I definitely don’t regret it. It was the perfect book. I finished it that night before the night of work was even over. It was a quick read, but the whole thing was just a little strange. I gave it 3/5 stars because it wasn’t anything spectacular, but it wasn’t horrible, either. It’s not for everyone, but I still recommend for anyone to give it a listen. I don’t know how I would have felt if I would have read it, though.

Book Swapathon Wrap Up

Book Swapathon Wrap Up

I cheated. I’m going to say that now. I read for an extra day. I used Sunday to finish up. So because of this, I read 6 books this week. But I’m only counting 3 toward this. And I didn’t even finish all the challenges! Let’s just get into this.

Fairy Tail by Hiro Mashima

I decided to read this book as my switched genre. I’m not usually one for reading shounen manga, or “man” manga. I use that very loosely. I don’t know if this is technically Shounen or not but hey. I counted it.

I am iffy about this. It wasn’t for me. It didn’t catch my attention at all.

Justice League vs Suicide Squad by Joshua Williamson

I got an arc of this comic from NetGalley and D.C. Comics for my honest review. This comes out June 27th, 2017.

I read this one for the swapped “method” of reading. I don’t usually read comics. I don’t usually read comics but I’d like to read more.

I enjoyed this but it wasn’t anything spectacular for me. I wasn’t excited to continue reading but I didn’t dread picking it up.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

I used this book as the book I swapped with a buddy. To finish this book is why I cheated and took an extra day. I needed to include this.

I loved this book. It was good. Enjoyable. Just what I’m looking for in a summer read. I wish the pacing was a bit faster, though. I was always waiting to see what big thing happened but nothing really came for me. Well, a couple things did but not every time I was anticipating it. Either way, it was an enjoyable for me.

I will be discussing the other books in my wrap up for June. I have read a lot this month so I hope you enjoy my wrap up when it goes up either next week or the week after.

Happy Reading!

April Wrap Up

This month has been crazy. I thought that I read a ton of books this month but then I realized that all of them were during Tome Topple and they wouldn’t be included here. So I’ve only got three books to mention. Total, I read 6 books this month. That puts my GoodReads count at 20 of the 55 books I wanted to read this month. I’m going to be trying a new set up with my wrap ups! I hope you enjoy it! I purchased a Book Log a couple weeks ago and I’m going to be using a few things I track in there for this!

Review: Yes

The more I sit here and think about it, the more my feelings change about this book. I didn’t really like it when I finished it. But I think a lot of that had to do with the fact I read that right after I finished ACOMAF. So since this wasn’t the best book I’ve ever read, I was kind of disappointed. I have changed my rating on GoodReads to a 4 out of 5 but I didn’t change it in my review.

Recommend To: I would say I would want to recommend this to younger young adults. Probably pre-teens. It’s a very meaningful book and I feel it would work for that age group.

Review: No

I read this book to my son over the course of a couple months. I read The Giver and Gathering Blue in High School and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. I want to reread Gathering Blue one day but I decided to start with Messenger since my son isn’t old enough to know any different. But I did enjoy this book. I don’t plan on writing a review so I’ll share my full thoughts really quickly.

I feel like a majority of the book was leading up to the last couple of chapters (that would make sense) and there wasn’t really much going on in the beginning. It felt like a first book to a series to me. It was all world building with a tiny bit of action at the end. That’s probably my main issue with this. The ending was rushed. If you know what I’m talking about, they seemed to skip over most of it. I mean, it kind of made sense but I also wish they would have gone a bit more in depth with the whole ending. I only partially expected the ending. I expected it but was really hoping that they wouldn’t go there. But they did. They went there. Overall, I did enjoy this book. I didn’t expect it to be spectacular and I knew that it wasn’t meant to be action packed. It was meant to convey a message (ha! Messenger) and that’s what it did for me.

So I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t like this book. This series was so overhyped and I was highly disappointed. I plan on doing a full spoiler-free and spoiler review so I won’t get too in depth here. I just couldn’t seem to get into the book and the plot just seemed average to me. Seemed to be too much of a copy of the first one. It’s spoiler-y so I’ll get more in depth on those thoughts in my full review.

Those are all the books I read this month outside of  my Tome Topple. Here are this month’s stats including Tome Topple stats (which are not on my wrap up as this is a new thing I’m trying with inspiration from Books and Lala)

Genres
Science Fiction – 3
Fantasy – 3

Average Page Count  – 528

Average Rating – 4/5

Other Stats
Finished 1 Series
Started 2 Series
Continued 1 Series
Caught Up With 1 Ongoing Series

A to Z Challenges Completed: 4 (G, I, M, S)
2017 Reading Challenges Completed: 1 (Read a book outside your favorite genre)
Diversity Bingo Challenges Completed: 0 (Shocker. I’m horrible at this)

3 Hardbacks
3 Paperback
2 Audiobooks
0 eBooks
(I listened to two books on audio and followed along in the book so they count for two)

I think that’s about it! I can’t really think of anymore stats to share with you guys. If you can think of any for my next wrap up, let me know! I’ve requested a couple ARCs so maybe I’ll be able to include an ARC next time around.

I hope you enjoyed! What was your favorite read this month? Happy reading!
